We don't have to make any decisions on Tuesday. I just thought it would be more productive to have actual examples instead of fighting over general concepts. A lot of team members would like lab coats but they turned out to be rather expensive, especially in cotton for tye dying. Black t-shirts are very affordable and price would not exclude them. Polo shirts are going to cost more but the main drawback is they have to be embroidered. We need our sponsors names on the shirts and that would require a shirt we could print on. (This doesn't mean we can't have six or so polo's, with our name embroidered on them, for presentations.)
We can't compare ourselves to other teams. While many teams have major sponsorships from large corporations or come from rich districts, most scramble for money, just like we do. My first year of coaching, the team started with nearly $5000 in the bank but by not carefully monitoring expenses we ended up with a zero balance at the end. I don't plan on asking for any additional money from parents because it would mean some kids would have to quit the team. Registration, robot expenses, hotel and travel expenses all come before pit and apparel costs. Now, if a group of 10 to 15 parents want to run an awesome garage sale in February, a couple of car washes and the like, then we should be good to go but until then, I make do with what I have. (Of note, in the teams flush years, we had a parent that handed us $5,000 checks each year.)
On the other hand, if a group of 10 team members want to make an awesome pit using affordable materials, you have 2 parents willing to help. We can also be creative with crazy hats and the like, for very little money, and stand out at the regionals. Most of the memorable teams wear crazy costumes and have lots of spirit.
